Bindjareb Pinjarra Animated

A commissioned piece for the 2023 Strange Festival for display in Yagan Square, Perth City. Bringing together the cast of the Bindjareb Pinjarra play, working with new and upcoming Nyoongar voice / acting talent and the detailed illustrations of artist Kam Kambarni bringing scenes of this darkly comedic yet truth-focused challenging theatrical production to life.

Premiere animated work based on the deadly / important satirical theatre show ‘Bindjareb Pinjarra.’ Originally an improvised comedy about WA’s Pinjarra Massacre created and performed by Noongar and Wadjella actors, now reimagined as a cartoon illustrated by Kambarni (Ballardong Noongar / Nimunburr / Yawuru decedent visual artist) and animated by Steven Alyian (Boorloo-based media-artist). A black comedy and crucial history lesson about the mass killing of Noongar people at Pinjarra on October 28, 1834 – an event recorded as the Battle of Pinjarra but mourned by local Noongar as a massacre.

BINDJAREB PINJARRA TEAM

In 1994 Kelton Pell, Geoff Kelso and Phil Thomson along with Trevor Parfitt (now deceased) created the play Bindjareb Pinjarra based around the Pinjarra Massacre and contemporary black-white relations in Western Australia. Working as absolute equals these Nyoongar and whitefella actor, comedians, writers & directors combined their skills to make a brilliant piece of reconciliation theatre that is tragic and funny and as relevant now as it was 30 years ago. Other performers who’ve joined the team over the years are Frank Nannup, Sam Longley, Isaac Drandic, Mark Storen, Ian Wilkes, Maitland Schnaars and Nigel Wilkes.

KAMBARNI

Kambarni is descended from the Nimunburr and Yawuru people of the Kimberley and the Ballardong Noongar people of the Perth region in Western Australia. He is an emerging illustrator who reflects the natural world with his intricate designs
