Stelarc: Stickman /miniStickman @ Tetem

On Sunday 27th of May 2018, Stelarc gave a five-hour performance of StickMan during the Maker Festival Twente in Tetem. StickMan, a full-body exoskeleton, is a programmable motion and sound machine which functions with not only the body connected, but also as an interactive installation.

Connected to StickMan, the artist’s arms and left leg are algorithmically actuated, while he can pivot on the right leg to turn one way or the other, interacting with his shadow image and with the video feedback of the projection. 64 possible combinations of gestures are generated. As well as a performance apparatus, StickMan operates as a sound machine. Sensors on StickMan generate sounds that augment the pneumatic noise and register the limb movements. The sound not only registers the involuntary choreography of the body, but also generates an acoustic landscape that makes the sounds an extension of StickMan’s body.

A smaller replica of StickMan enables visitors to record and play their choreography by bending the limbs into a sequence of positions, which also inadvertently composes the sounds generated.

StickMan is shown for the first time in Europe. The smaller replica of StickMan was made especially for the exhibition in Tetem.

StickMan exhibition runs from 17.05.18 - 19.08.18 in Tetem in Enschede, the Netherlands:

The body is algorithmically actuated by a minimal six degree-of-freedom exoskeleton. A miniStickMan is engineered that is a physical interactive interface, allowing audience interaction. By moving miniStickMan’s limbs a choreography can be initiated, that also inadvertently contributes to the composition of sound.

Sensors on StickMan generate the sounds that augment the pneumatic noise and register the limb movements. A ring of speakers circulates the sounds, immersing the audience.

A thirty minute body installation was performed for GOGBOT Café at Tetem, 22 May, 2018 and a five hour body installation was performed at Tetem as part of the Maker Festival Twente, 27 May, 2018, Enschede.
